Before she became the go-to designer for celebrity weddings, Vera Wang had one very important client—herself. In 1989, when Wang (who was then the design director for Ralph Lauren’s women’s accessories) married her husband, Arthur Becker, she wasn’t satisfied with the wedding dresses that were available. “I’m very modern and sophisticated,” she told USA Today in 2009. “I didn’t want to look like the top of a wedding cake.” So she hired a seamstress and created her own minimalist dress. Within six months, Wang had left Ralph Lauren and said “I do” to her own boutique.
