Herb Ritts was one of the leading celebrity photographers of the 1980s and 1990s. He concentrated on B/W photography and portraits in the style of classical Greek sculpture. He started taking photos after he and Richard Gere — a friend of his — decided to shoot some photos.
Ritts took photos of Elizabeth Taylor, Ronald Reagan, Madonna and Cindy Crawford — amongst others. He also directed many musicvideos i.e. the music video for Michael Jackson’s “In the Closet” featured supermodel Naomi Campbell. Ritts died in 2002 at the age of 50 from complications caused by AIDS.
